Calvin College Professor Faces Trial in Honduras

Officials from the Christian Reformed Church in North America (CRCNA) have sent a letter to leaders of the government in Honduras, asking that Calvin College sociology professor, Kurt Ver Beek, who is also a co-founder of the Association for a more Just Society (AJS), receive a fair hearing on charges of slander that go before a Honduran tribunal this week. Charges of slander were brought before a lower court by the private security company, SETECH, stemming from AJS’s investigation into the death Dionisio Diaz Garcia, a human rights lawyer who worked for AJS.  AJS had implicated SETECH in the death, which ultimately began the slander proceeding.

Add your voice to those of the CRC, Calvin College, Brian McLaren, the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA) and others: Tell Honduran justice officials it’s time for them to crack down on Honduras’ worst labor-rights violators, and to stop facilitating harrassment of AJS-supported justice workers—who risk their lives to uphold the laws these officials are supposed to defend. ACT TODAY!
