Thoughts on Poverty Tourism, Poverty Elitism, and Short-term Mission Trips

If you, like me, have concerns and misgivings about short term mission trips conducted by schools and churches, I think you might appreciate reading the following post by Rachel Held Evans on her blog: Poverty Tourism, Poverty Elitism, and Grace for All. I think organizers of such trips could help make such trips more beneficial to everyone if they took some time to at least wrestle with some of the issues that Rachel addresses in her post. Additionally, I think it would be worthwhile for organizers and participants of any kind of service “project” trips to read and study a book such as, When Helping Hurts, prior to even planning such a trip.
